OUR STORY

How We Got Started

If we were a “normal” water company, this is where we’d try to convince you to care about bazillion-year volcanic filtration or a faraway exotic island spring. We believe it’s about time to focus on something that actually matters: keeping plastic out of oceans.

Open Water is a new kind of water brand, using the most recycled beverage packaging on the planet (that’s aluminum bottles and cans!) and creating a process to craft premium purified still and sparkling waters as locally as possible. This means the highest quality water with the lowest possible environmental impact. Over 100 million bottles later, we think we’re onto something.

2014

Recent college grads Nicole and Jess launched the world's first ever still water in an aluminum bottle. The brand was called Green Sheep back then (entrepreneurship tip: your brand name is not as clever as you think it is).

Fun Fact: Open Water eliminates over 100,000 plastic bottles daily

2016

Open Water launches a sparkling version, designed with lots and lots of tiny delicate bubbles for carbonation that lasts through your day.

2018

We launched our 12oz short cans, with a lower price point vs. our bottles in order to make Open Water accessible to more people.

This same year, we eliminated our 1 millionth plastic bottle!
